Trees aren’t like human beings. They don’t heal and repair damaged tissues. Instead, they use a technique called CODIT to deal with wounds from a tree pruning Depew service.

What Is The CODIT Process?

CODIT is the process a tree undergoes when it gets injured during a tree pruning service. They isolate the affected area from the rest of the healthy parts. 

Here is a breakdown of the acronym CODIT:

C – Compartmentalization

O – Of

D – Defect 

I – In

T – Trees

Compartmentalization is just a fancy way of talking about compartments. Imagine a bag. You have all different compartments in it that can hold different things. 

Everything you put inside the compartments is all inside your bag. They are just separated from each other. The same thing goes for trees. 

A tree separates any wounds or infections from a tree pruning service from the rest of the tree. The injured part will be part of the tree but will stay in its own compartment. This way, the rot or infection remains in the compartment, keeping the rest of the tree safe.

As you have seen, the healing in trees differs from healing in human beings. In humans, the body automatically repairs the damaged or infected tissue. But trees seal off the damaged or infected tissues from the rest. 

The CODIT process comprises two parts:

Part I – Forming of three walls to block the spread of decay

Part II – Forming of the last wall that seals the wound

How Does The Process Of CODIT Work?

By now, you must have got the general idea of CODIT. Now, let’s take a deeper look into how the entire process works. Here, we will discuss the two parts of CODIT, including each of the 4 walls. 



Part I Of CODIT (Walls 1-3)

Part I of CODIT begins immediately after the tree pruning service. The tree constructs three walls around the injured site post the service. This will prevent the rot or infection from traveling through the rest of the tree. 

The photosynthetic rate of the tree will determine how well the tree can compartmentalize. 


Wall I of the CODIT process will block the spread of vertical decay. This way, the decay won’t be able to travel up and down the injured tree. 

However, this CODIT wall is the weakest of all. Even if the wall is there, it is possible that the decay may still travel up and down the tree.


Wall 2 of the CODIT stops the spread of inward decay in the tree. That means Wall 2 will prevent the decay from heading towards the center of the tree. 

If in any way, the decay travels all the way to the pith/core of the tree, this wall will no longer exist. So, it is quite vital that Wall 2 stops the decay. Otherwise, there’s no coming back. 

In case the tree’s growth rings make up Wall 2, the wall can become a little stronger. The tree pruning service decay will have a tougher time moving between the growth rings. 


Wall 3 stops the spread of lateral decay in the tree. This way, the decay can’t travel around the circumference of the tree. 

Part II Of CODIT (Wall 4)

So, the first 3 walls have done their job of preventing the decay from traveling inside of the tree. Now, it’s time for part II – the sealing of the tree pruning service wound. 


Wall 4 is the strongest and the mightiest wall in the CODIT process. This wall seals off the wound from the rest of the tree. As the tree continues to grow, Wall 4 will stop the decay from traveling out to the new growth. 


Seals Off Decay And Infection

As we have mentioned throughout here, CODIT can stop the spread of decay and infections from a bad tree pruning service. The tree creates small compartments to trap any nasties. But of course, the tree needs to be healthy for the CODIT process to happen. 

Provides A Micro-Environment For Organisms

The CODIT process doesn’t always work properly. The walls 1-3 may form a strong barrier. But it may so happen that wall 4 fails to cover the tree pruning service wound. 

In that case, a hole forms that can become a perfect home for a great deal of wildlife. The wildlife list includes –

  • Birds
  • Bees
  • Squirrels
  • Possums

Limitations Of CODIT

Creates Weak Points

No doubt, wall 4 is strong and can prevent the outward spread of decay. But it can become a weak point later on. It can lead to future cracks and in the worst case, line failure in the trees. 

Keeps The Tree Starving

The CODIT process requires energy – that means the tree will need more food. Using up all the resources to prepare food can stress, starve, and weaken the tree.
